Sumo in Nagoya (Japan 2014 Day 5)

I came to Nagoya for the sumo. It’s a nice enough city, as far as places go, but I didn’t actually get around to see much of anything else.

The crowd at the sumo was quite mixed. More men, yes, but plenty of women too. There are a couple of mother/daughter pairs sitting quite close to me.

The sumo dudes are huge. The tallest are a hand taller than me, and I’m a hand taller than the average Japanese person.

It’s the ritual and the ceremony that’s the most fascinating about sumo – the drink of water, spitting, squatting and clapping their hands.

See for yourself.
