Saturday 13 July 2014.
“Entertaining burlesque” is how I later summed up in my travel journal my visit with my sister to the Robot Restaurant in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
The only other burlesque I’d ever seen was the Star Wars burlesque show at the Vanguard in Newtown a couple of years ago, which I didn’t find entertaining at all. It was basically a bad strip show in Star Wars costumes.
In comparison, the Robot Restaurant was a tongue-in-cheek extravaganza, with live music, lights, drumming, mechanised robots, saxophones, crowd participation, people in robot suits, and, yes, women in their underwear.
The crowd was all Westerners, as far as I could see. There were even two b-grade American TV Stars, one of whom my sister recognised but couldn’t remember his name. We were the envy of all the American fangirls in the crowd when we went over and just started chatting to them like they were human beings.
Later in the evening they asked my sister to take their photo standing on a robot thingo, which is when I snapped this one of them. I still have no idea who these dudes are – the one on the left is apparently the famous one…
I imagine if I’d had less beers I’d have enjoyed the evening less. From my journal, scrawled late at night and still drunk as I lumbered into my hotel room, “Robot Restaurant! Hilarious! Entertaining. Mildly raunchy. Super ironic.”
If there had been an equal amount of men in their underwear it would have earned an easy 5 stars from me.
